Karoline is an illustrator and printmaker based in Birmingham. She grew up in Northamptonshire and discovered a love of screen printing on an art foundation course at Nene College in Northampton. As well as printmaking Karoline is inspired by folk art, craft and costumes from around the world and Eastern Europe in particular. Soviet bloc graphic design and illustration have been an influence on her work since she travelled to Russia in the early 1990s.
Karoline’s work is characterised by bold outlines, bright colours and pattern so it is well suited to screen printing. She draws black and white artwork by hand and then screen prints it using photo stencils. During lockdown she was unable to access a print studio so started making simple hand cut paper stencils at home instead. She used these to screen print different layers of colour and shapes to create small editions of finished prints.
